Todd Florin, MD, MSCE

Todd Florin, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and attending physician in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Lurie Children’s. He is also Director of Research for the Division of Emergency Medicine at Lurie Children’s and Director of the Grainger Research Program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Florin's research program aims to improve the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of children with common, serious infections, with a current focus on lower respiratory tract infections. Current work centers on development of risk stratification tools and use of biomarkers to improve outcomes in children with pneumonia at the point-of-care. His work has also centered on resource utilization, variation in care, antimicrobial stewardship, and use of clinical trials to improve treatments for respiratory tract infections in children. Funded continuously by the NIH for the last decade, he is currently PI of an R01 from NHLBI to develop and validate a pediatric pneumonia risk score across 14 pediatric emergency departments. He is co-PI on 2 multinational prospective cohort studies through the Pediatric Emergency Research Network (PERN) - one focused on pneumonia and the other on COVID-19 in children presenting for emergency care.

He is a past recipient of the Academic Pediatric Association Young Investigator Award, in addition to research awards from Lurie Children’s, the Sections of Emergency Medicine and Hospital Medicine of the American Academy of Pediatrics and mentorship awards from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He currently serves as Strategy and Operations Officer for the Society for Pediatric Research and on the Board of Directors of the Pediatric Academic Societies.

Ravi Jhaveri, MD

Ravi Jhaveri, MD, attended Boston Medical University as an undergraduate and Mount Sinai School of Medicine for medical school. He subsequently completed his residency training in General Pediatrics at the University of Chicago Hospitals and a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. After fellowship, he joined the division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Duke University Medical Center, then 9 years later joined the Pediatrics department at NC Children's Hospital/UNC as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the division of Infectious Diseases. After having served on the faculty at both Duke and UNC, in October 2018 Dr. Jhaveri became Associate Division Head for Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. 

Dr. Jhaveri's research has largely focused on Hepatitis C virus pathogenesis. He is currently in transitional studies into the mechanisms and circumstances surrounding mother to infant transmission of HCV. Dr. Jhaveri is also involved in clinical aspects of children infected with HCV, from evaluation and treatment to studies of long-term outcomes. He currently serves on the AASLD/IDSA HCV Guidelines Panel. He also conducts research on management of febrille infants and optimizing the use of laboratory testing to aid physician decision-making.

Arun Gosain, MD

Arun K. Gosain, MD, was on staff at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin from 1992 to 2006, where he served as section head of plastic surgery during his last four years on staff. He then served as chief of the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland from 2006 to 2012 before joining Lurie Children’s in 2012. He was named Children’s Service Board Professor of Plastic Surgery in 2017.  This is the first endowed professorship focused in pediatric plastic surgery in the greater Chicago area.

Dr. Gosain received his medical degree in 1981 from the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine. His postgraduate training included fellowships in both craniofacial surgery at New York University School of Medicine in 1992 and hand and microsurgery at Medical College of Wisconsin in 1991. He completed residencies in plastic surgery at Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals Program in 1990, and in general surgery at both University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Hospitals in 1988 and University of California San Francisco Medical Center in 1986.

Dr. Gosain’s special interests are in pediatric plastic surgery with expertise in craniofacial and vascular anomalies, congenital nevi, correction of cleft lip and palate and secondary deformities, rhinoplasty and cosmetic surgery in adolescents, distraction of the facial skeleton, dynamic reanimation for facial paralysis, treatment of neurofibromatosis, and surgical treatment of refractory migraines.

Erin Rowell, MD

Erin Rowell, MD, is an attending pediatric surgeon at Lurie Children’s and is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She is the Medical Director of the Fertility & Hormone Preservation & Restoration Program (FHPR) at Lurie Children’s and Co-Director for Pediatric Surgery for the Chicago Institute for Fetal Health. Her clinical interests include surgery for pediatric ovarian and testicular tissue removal for cryopreservation, and surgery for congenital anomalies of the abdomen and chest.

Dr. Rowell completed a fellowship in Surgical Ethics at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago in 2010. She is a member of the Ethics Advisory Board at Lurie Children’s and teaches the Surgical Ethics course for 3rd year medical students at Northwestern. She currently serves on the Ethics Committee and the Education Committee for the American Pediatric Surgery Association.

Her research focuses on surgical technique and tissue processing for ovary and testis cryopreservation, particularly for pre-pubertal pediatric patients at risk for infertility due to their medical diagnosis or treatment.

Dr. Rowell sees patients at Lurie Children’s main hospital location, and at the Lurie Children’s Outpatient Center locations in Arlington Heights, Northbrook, and Skokie. She performs surgery at both Lurie Children’s main hospital and at Lurie Children’s Northbrook Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Alanna Higgins Joyce, MD, MPH

Attending Physician, Hospital-Based Medicine; Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Hospital-Based Medicine), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Alanna Higgins Joyce, MD, MPH, is an attending pediatrician in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine at Lurie Children’s, caring for hospitalized children and newborns. She is also Clerkship Director in Pediatrics where she oversees medical student programming and assessment. In this role Alanna works with faculty, staff, and administration across several institutions for the training of medical students in patient care settings. Alanna is an Associate Professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; she has published and spoken nationally in the areas of medical education, faculty feedback, and curriculum development.

Alanna holds an MD and an MPH from Tulane University and completed residency training in Pediatrics at the former Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She has a Master of Science in Teaching and experience teaching middle-school science. Alanna earned her bachelor’s degree in cognitive science from Northwestern University. She is a mother of three boys and a lifelong ballet dancer.
